湯島聖堂(Yushima Seido) / 千代田区(Chiyoda-ku)

“湯島聖堂 (Yushima Seido)” is located in Central Tokyo.

It is not temple nor Shinto Shrine. It is Mausoleum for “孔子(Confucius)” built by “徳川綱吉 (Tokugawa Tsunayoshi)” who was 5th “将軍(Shogun)” in “江戸幕府(Edo Shogunate)”. Originally, Confucius’s Mausoleum was built by “林羅山(Hayashi Razan)” in “上野(Ueno)” as private school. Tokugawa Tsunayoshi moved Confucius’s Mausoleum to Yushima and it became public school named as  “昌平坂学問所(Shoheizaka School)”.

There is a big Confucius statute at very quiet place in Yushima Seido which is the highest Confucius statute in the world.  It is given by the republic of China which is Taiwan.

It is called as the place where the education has started in Japan based on such a historical background. Shoheizaka school is the origin of various university in Japan including Tokyo University. Nowadays, there are various university around Yushima Seido including Tokyo Medical and Dental University which is located just next to the Yushima Seido.

Yushima Seido is near “秋葉原(Akihabara)” and “御茶ノ水 (Ochanomizu)”.  There are a lot of building near Yeshiva Seido but it is very quiet and spiritual place.
